The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center dominated Lower Manhattan's skyline for nearly four decades. At over 1,700 feet tall, they were the tallest in Manhattan from 1972-1974 and held other records until their destruction on September 11, 2001. Hijackers crashed two planes into the towers, causing catastrophic damage that reduced 110 stories to dust.
